It's a mold called Torula. Torula, which looks like velvety black meal, can be found on many types of wood, dead plant stems and leaves, and several crops. The spores are at their peak in the fall and late spring. It loves humidity. Put a wood rickhouse in hot, humid Kentucky and Torula will find it.
