In ancient Rome, it became customary to put a small piece of bread in the glass when drinking to wish good health and fortune. It is not known if the purpose of the bread - toast - was for flavor or food, though some speculate that burnt toast was used like activated charcoal to purify the questionable Roman spirits. Eventually, the ritual became know as "drinking a toast".
